Perhaps it will be possible to continue here a discussion
which began in another forum.  The discussion was broad
and related generally to any and all devices which are
able to produce some form of "Radiant" output.

As overdone as this may be, would this qualify?

Were you thinking along these lines?

Yes, that is a definite possibility.

The concept is sound, as some of the commentary
on the page suggests.  It must be better "engineered"
however, to efficiently collect and step down the fairly
high voltage charge.

There are several old patents describing systems for
collecting atmospheric charge.  With modern electronic
devices it is now much easier to fabricate such a system.

Right, I agree.  There are high voltage Zener diodes to
take the place of a spark gap in a long string, for instance?

Otherwise all one is doing is collecting 50/60 Hz ambient line
power by resonance, yes?
As I said on OU.com, if you're way out in the 'sticks' and
'bushes' of your county, it'll take a whole lot longer wire to
get usable voltage.

(There are a whole bunch of antenna patents on the U.S.
Patent Database to be downloaded.)

Just a generic comment or two about getting power by putting up an antenna.  I am not talking about picking up power line energy, I am talking about how you often read that for every meter in height you can get X amount of volts from the atmosphere itself.

The problem with these concepts is that it's voltage with almost no capability to sustain any appreciable amount of current.  Here is a thought experiment:  Suppose you have 1000 volts available from a conductor that's 25 meters up in the air relative to the earth ground, and you connect up a kid's small toy like a motorized car.  The available voltage will instantly drop to nearly zero.  There is no current, and hence power associated with the atmospheric voltage.

Any time you read something about "extracting voltage from the atmosphere itself," if the article just mentions available voltage and doesn't mention available power, then it's not a real article.

Well, I don't do expensive, high voltage experimentation (these long wire antennas are usually well-warned to be dangerous to deadly if touched when you're grounded.)

However, on this board, we have:

But, I agree in principle with MileHigh.  It would at least take a hell of a wire run to get enough power to be worthwhile, particularly if you're living out of town, IMHO.

The nature of the atmospheric electricity is both well
known and well researched:

First

Second

Third

Fourth

A small scale collection facility would require some
amount of elevated "antenna" wire such as a "loop"
suspended forty or more feet above ground around
the periphery of a designated site.

The quantity of electrical charge accumulated can
often be very surprising.  In the days of large rhombic
antenna arrays this charge was considered a great
nuisance and indeed could assume lethal proportions.

"Farmhand" at the Energetic Forum is wanting to drive
several MOSFETs from a pulse generator.

This is a good idea and is relatively easy to implement
effectively.  To drive each of the MOSFETs adequately
to achieve efficient switching transition speed as well
as lowest possible Rds(on) it is best to make use of
Gate Driver Chips.

The MCP1406 (Inverting) and the MCP1407 (Non-Inverting)
are such chips which are small (8 pin DIP) and fast.

Ideally, each MOSFET should have its own Gate Driver
Chip installed very close to the Gate and Source
connections.  The Input to the Gate Driver Chip will
accept both TTL and CMOS logic level signals to
develop the "conditioned" Gate Drive Output.  Several
Gate Driver Chips may easily be driven from a low
powered pulse generator circuit without any signal
degradation.

Download the datasheet for the MCP1406/MCP1407
for additional information regarding hookup and use.

When properly driven the MOSFET will switch heavy
current flow with very little internal loss and very
little waste heat development.
