It's a Hardy Padmore version of the Lowne patent Vacuum engine. Group: Moderator Hero Member Posts: 2736	Hi muDped. Thanks for the interest, I just love making engines. These are " Vacuum " engines, sometimes called flame lickers/gulpers. A volume of heated air is sucked into the cylinder and then a timed valve shuts. The air entering the cooler cylinder now starts to contract and good old atmospheric pressure does the work. These are my own design going back about 25 years. These short videos show my progression through the various " standard " arrangements. Vertical, inverted vertical and horizontal. Nice little engines Grum. But it would seem that the hotter the cylinder get's,the less efficient the engine become's. Also,so much wasted heat going on there. I see a couple of things that could be done to make those engines far more efficient. Knowing you yes, there's definitely room for greater efficiency and you're correct, as the cylinder warms up the cooling effect lessens. At the end of the day they are merely toys, my designs loosely based upon the late Victorian engine shown at the front in the picture below. Built by Ernst Planck of Nuremberg. Thanks for the links: Engine running on a Lighter The Flame Licker Engine The Vacuum Engine It is quite amazing how they're able to pull flammable gases from the flames. Showing us that Inventors back in the "Old Days" were were uncommonly aware of Real Science! Another type of Engine that really fascinates me is those that are powered by the Woodgas or Charcoal Gas Generators. I've been itchin' to make one of those Gas Generators for a long time. Very nice indeed lol drop bears is what we tell tourists koalas are to scare them. During spring the males call looking for a mate. At night it sounds pretty terrifying if you don’t know what it is.

Group: Moderator Hero Member Posts: 2736	The Retlas Dynamo. Many moons ago a friend and I designed a dynamo ( Manchester style ) to go with the increasingly larger model IC engine kits I produced. Sadly Vincent passed away and whilst clearing his workshop I found a set of very partially machined castings, these were passed on to a good friend who had recently finished one of Vincent's masterpieces, the Retlas gas engine. I thought you might like to see how these very bare castings are coming together. I'm trying to source a particular form of " eyelet " one where the multi strand Copper wire was formed into a circle by a many pointed star that then was hand crimped over a Copper or Brass washer, this was then placed on a stud and held by a washer and nut. These were seen on many early electrical machines. I feel this would add greater " authenticity " to my friends rapidly concluding build. Cheers Graham. --------------------------- Nanny state ?
