oh.  didnt know you were using dc biasing till now.
Without the reverse DC biasing of the current in the unused satellite's windings, the flux from the central N pole will be distributed to all of the satellites.  If none of the satellite windings are energized, then the central flux will be distributed equally among them (because the air-gaps are all equal).
If some of the satellites are forward biased (as S poles) then more of the flux from the central N pole will flow to them.  If some of the satellites are reverse biased (as N poles) then less of the flux from the central N pole will flow to them.

I think that for the sake of axial symmetry, it makes sense to forward-pulse the satellites as diametrically opposite pairs (necessitating a 4-phase driver) but the satellites can also be pulsed individually (necessitating an 8-phase driver), however the symmetry is lost then.

Anyway, please draw a flux diagram - it doesn't have to be "pretty".
