Are you sure it is actually wiped clean and not just a connection MB/socket or OS problem ?
I guess you will find out during the reinstall process.
What is your Operating System and which version ? If you don't mind mentioning.

Several days ago a friend's HP laptop began acting
weird like it had been infected with malware;  then
it failed to recognize the hard drive at all and couldn't
boot from it.  It did boot from the dvd drive however
and with Puppy Linux was able to perform several
tests and diagnostics.

Visual inspection of the tiny hard drive (big capacity but
very small size) revealed the connector had worked loose
somehow.  Re-seating the connector and securing it
properly so that it couldn't work loose again solved the
problem.  All is back to normal and no data was lost or
corrupted, fortunately.  Windoze 8.

Yeah muDped, I mentioned it because the same thing has happened to me with the regular SATA 2 cables/connectors, I use the ones with the little metal locking clip now and always zip tie the cables so there is not much torque or pull on the connector. Quite right in that the connector to the HDD itself is more often the culprit. I've never bought a computer whole, right from the beginning I learned how to build my first computer but I've only been using them since about 2004.

Indeed puppy on a usb is so awesome it is difficult to describe, people freak out when you slip in the usb press F12 then boot their computer and show them their stuff on the corrupted Windoze drive, piccies and so forth, they always ask can you do that with any computer and the answer is always not if the user prevents the possibility, then they go ahah ok.

Hi FH

XP is my system and yes I have now got up and running again.

The hard disc was showing that it infact had been wiped clean apart from the area which can't be touched, it showed available space to use as all the disc, there was no information on the disc.

The problem maybe that now with the original XP there will be no updates to the last down load that windows gave suport to, we will see.

Now putting back slowly all the other programs I have.

Regards

Do you have the XP Service Pack 3 on a CD ? and the system drivers ect. I realize the HDD you have is probably good but when my old dell 1501 laptop 60 gig HDD looked sad after about 6 years use by my son I made a clone of it to a Samsung 120 gig SS drive. First I cleaned and defragmented it then Installed Service Pack 3 then I updated it then I cloned it to the samsung SSD. Now the thing boots up quicker than any computer I have, and it's a single core AMD Turion 2000 Mhz, 2 gig of ram on XP 32 bit, It's still a good computer, very useful, if a bit slow when I expect it to do too much. My bad. It was well worth the 110 dollars or whatever it was to upgrade to SSD when I needed a new one anyway. SSD may be less reliable than a large single platter HDD though is all, dunno.

Could it be that XP may become more secure though as less people use it ?

EDITED First line.

P.S. I think all the released updates for xp are still available. But trying to use internet explorer 6 or whatever may be an issue.

Same thing happened to my brothers HP laptop but even a new drive did no good with it. Personally I would have run it from a fast SD card or USB stick and kept using it if it were mine.  O0

Confirmed I can still get updates for my XP installation on my laptop. Not sure but you may need to get internet explorer 8 before trying to do too much, can't remember, and if you have service pack 3 on disk install it as soon as you can you may need to install Dot NET framework 2 or something to be able to do it. Anyway always fun to reinstall windows xp on a friday night, well friday here anyway.

Microsoft Update wants to give me for security updates the "Malicious Software Removal Tool" and for optional software updates "Skype 7.3". lol.

I would Upload the SP 3 ISO in minutes for you, but it would cost me dollars to do it. I'll get wired up to the fast cable soon enough.

If you still did not touch the disk, the http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Step_By_Step may help you to recover data. From the live Linux installation such as one listed in http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Livecd it should be running.
This tool recovered data for me many times even when windows was unable to detect partitions after damage.

Cheers!

Hi All

Yes as I am at the moment running without updates on the original XP, it is with the SP2 pack and I'm looking to see how I can get the SP3, even skype won't load now, needs SP3.

Really thinking if Father Christmas will come early and buy me a new computer :-\ I doubt it very much, no money at this house and the cheapest laptop I have seen is around 400€. My 8 grand children will have to come first, all in the UK, so have to send money to their parents, bang goes my new computer :'(

At least I can get on the net, and I can use my free tablet for skype O0

regards

I feel for ya Mike, now that I must pay high data costs I am glad I already had SP3 on disk and took the precautions I did by cloning my original HDD which still works and is in the cupboard if I corrupt the new SSD I can simply re-clone the HDD to the SSD again and I am back to where I was when I installed the new SSD. Short of a serious failure the laptop should work for another 10 years or more. I did that so I don't need to bother with all the System drivers ect.. I wish I could afford to post you a Sevice pack 3 disk by traditional mail, and I will when I can afford the postage if you like, I am dead broke due to having to pay the insurance excess and moving in costs ect. I actually am now in some debt which really gets my goat so to speak, I abhor debt. But the world is now in such a state that debt is inevitable for most of us. I can probably send you a disc next Thursday, providing I can find it. I have a huge mess here of boxes and stuff, I'll try to locate the CD to begin with.

Maybe another member closer to you with cheap data could download the service pack 3 ISO and Burn it CD then send it to you by real physical mail..

Awesome, good to hear another xp user still going. Yeah I made an old fashioned CD for my xp service pack 3. It's still working but I should back up the ISO to my Archive HDD just in case it might get scratched. I'll do that when I find the darn thing, it must be right in front of me because I can't find it. hehe.

AHAH, found it and done, Freeware program called "BurnAware Free" copied the disc to an ISO in about 2:20 seconds on W7 Dual core machine. It's a handy program to have does lots of stuff.

Link to site page.

A multimedia program known as pBurn is included with
most Puppies. It has very similar capabilities to BurnAware
Free.

Handling the various tasks of dealing with multimedia
has never been easier than today.  It is very nice to find
programs which can just about do it all!

Aye, I too still on occasion boot up Win98 or XP.  My old
Canon laserprinter can only be driven from Win98; and
HandBrake, a very useful video tool, in XP.  Otherwise I
tend to avoid WinDoze like the plague and never use it
for internet surfing.

I use Handbrake almost every day. It makes good use of multi threading and really heats up my new machine at full tilt for a few hours.

I just signed up to Tinder looks like it gonna be a rough week. Three matches today, there is demand for men here. Apparently.

EDIT: No Tinder is a scam, the reasons for that I am yet to understand.

I have evidence of automated responses, and will go to the ombudsman about that. A scam is a scam.
They are busted.

Since my problems with my computer I can't get into skype on this computer, it seems it has been blocked!!!!!!!!!! other computers is not a problem with my a/c. I use skype a lot for business and for family apart from what I do in the energy field.

Maybe I'm paranoid, maybe not! but I get no help from skype to solve the problem.

When I redid my computer skype worked for 24hrs without a problem, now there is no way I can get into skype!!! shows an OE problem, and going through all the process there is no solution and they won't help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyone had the same problem? or is it just me! I am outspoken, maybe I'm a marked person! at nearly 65 yrs old I speak what I think and that's that.

Regards

Mike

An unusual problem that is technically very
interesting.

You're saying that just that computer is somehow
being rejected by Skype when you try to connect
and that your other computers via the same IP
will work fine? ??? :o

Could it be malware of some sort? >:(

Here's hoping that you find a solution soon and
that you'll give us a complete report on what it
was... :)

Have you installed any other programs since when Skype was working ?
What version of skype is it a newer version of skype might not be compatible.
Did you reinstall the system drivers. Possibly updating the Dot Net Framework and Such could help.
I think microsoft will still have more updates there for XP after the Service Pack 3 for download/installation.
Check the optional Updates, it might recommend the last best version of Skype for XP or something.
Sometime the weird stuff resolves itself. Then there is always the "System Restore" function too maybe go back to when
it was working . Odd problem, I don't use Skype. yet.

Hi All

I set up a new a/c and that works fine on this computer, and the old one works fine on the laptop, so what is going on I really do not know, most strange

PS Sorry about your troubles Farmhand, I have just had an electro and the Doc thinks I have a valve problem in my heart, waiting for X ray at the moment to confirm this or not, all a bit worrying.

Take it easy, sounds kinda serious. We can hope for improvement and try to stay as stress free as possible, I've learned to try to not let things worry me. But I am a stressed monkey a lot of the time, if I get too stressed I try to find an outlet or do some self psychology and "self talk" in my head positively. Best of luck on you results.

Mechanical problems mostly require surgery to rectify, Here to hoping you don't have to go through a surgery. I get anxious about surgery on my neck and lower back ect. but those are not the same as problems with the pump, my problems are not "life threatening" so I am lucky, so far anyway.

Now I'm on flat ground I actually went for a run the other night, it's only 350 meters to my eldest brothers house, but within 50 yards of his house I began to give out, I got pain in my chest and had to hyper-ventilate to catch my breath. However I had a short rest of about 30 minutes then ran home again but went a lot slower. It was almost impossible to run that far on the mountain without boots, here I can use running shoes. My lower and mid back felt the strain the next few days, also sore leg muscles, but that felt good/normal.

Rootin for ya Mike.  O0

I think it is all stress related, plenty of that here ATM, it has been one of those years, the more I try to relax the more stressfull things happen, murphies law I think :'(

Will have to wait for the Xray, sometimes need to wait a month or so, that's how the national health works C.C

Thanks for the concern, I don't think I'm going to disapear soon, have had the blood pressure problem all this year, it's the low pressure being high, should be around 70-80 and I am 80-100 and why a possible valve problem

Yeah I hear ya, Life is one big long test. I have to go to court for "Driving without due care and attention" as a result of my collision.
I say that is fair enough for me, I'll wear that and I deserve it as well. Probably get a couple hundred dollar fine, but as long as my insurance pays out for the other guy I'll be satisfied, I think they will also pay me, after my meeting with the investigating officer this morning I see no reason for them to refuse me. I showed him the dash cam footage on my computer and gave him a copy on an old micro sd card. Just gotta take it as it comes and press on regardless. I need to find money to pay specialist doctors and stuff for my existing spinal conditions as the public health system here is choked up and not working very well either. I get a full body CT scan on monday and after that I'll see if I can get a private Neurologist to look into some things.
