OK chaps, just to let everyone know whats going on.
We had server unreachable for certain parts of the globe, some UK, Poland and Canada and probably more, but it worked fine in other various places, the website timedout, it looks like the internet backbone was blocking certain paths to the server, it turned out it was not just OUR infact every website hosted on the shared server was affected.
I did not know that at the time, our host was unable to even see any fault and could not fix it, as i did not know how long it would last i started working with another host in the UK and was in the process of transferring to that host, but when the site was backed up for the transfer, it failed to backup due to the large size of the files, i pruned loads of stuff not used and managed to back it up OK.
When this backup was finally transferred (took time to download and upload) it became apparent there were still issues with the back up, i then used ftp to get all the files down, i already had previous ftp backups.
I then realized that loads of attachment files were missing on the current server, it is looking like we have exceeded the max files that a UNIX server allows, so when i tried re uploading the missing files via ftp others then vanished, it was impossible to get the full set up, i then tried the new host and the same thing happened, it was at this point i started looking for the reason, it looks like we are exceeding the total files allowed in a folder, so the thing i need to sort out is to split the attachments folder and spread all the files.
I have all the files and at this current point you will find some attachments that appear to be missing, and they are until i fix this problem.
I am only just starting to work out this problem, and at this point it is looking like our old version of smf does not support multiple attachment folders, so it is looking like i need to upgrade our current version to the newest version of smf, this is no easy task due to the extensive changes we did to get our current theme running and all the different features we have running, like chat etc.
So i am working on these issues and have a lot to sort, mean while if you see certain attachments not working, best not to try re uploading them as that could make it impossible to restore them from my backup files.
I will keep everyone updated as i go in this thread.
Cheers
Peter
Thanks Peter. Your update is much appreciated.
It is unfortunate that what should be a straight-forward
process has become incredibly difficult.
Thanks a million Peter!.
Sorry for all the hassle.
Thats Ok, about time we upgraded smf anyway. O0
And I think we agreed already what the new theme would be over a year ago.
Thanks Peter - I'm sure there are a bunch of us that can help out if you need any. O0 The joys of server upgrades!
Thanks Peter for update.
For max files issue you might read and configure like in these links:
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/8238860/maximum-number-of-files-folders-on-linux
http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/linux-increase-the-maximum-number-of-open-files/
There are some 30 000 000+ files in one of backup Linux servers in my work so this number can give you rough idea how big it can be on the filesystem.
Cheers!
OK chaps tonight is the night i am going to try a smf upgrade and server transfer, who knows whats going to happen, i have been trying to do trials with mixed results, either way we will be upgraded to a new smf version and this theme will no longer work, so i have started building a new theme similar to this one, there will be a lot of code edits needed to get it how we want and this will be done as i get time and we work out what needs doing.
The important thing is if you are having problems post them on here.
As from this post any new posts on this forum will not be transferred, so best to stop posting until you see the new theme.
If it goes horribly wrong then i may have to abort and go back to this server, only one way to find out :)
See you all on the other side in a couple of hours hopefully.
Cheers
Peter
OK any problems then post them in here and i will try to sort them out.
Things so far
The shoutbox is redesigned and newer than our older forum version but seems to stall the website during a page refresh, page seems to take 1 second to load with shoutbox enabled.
I added topics at the top and started a stats section like the old website had, need to delete user and stats at the bottom of the website.
Need to get the image veiwer working so we can see larger images like before.
Need to add spelling checker to posts
the user information on a post is halfway down the post instead of at the top.
It's looking pretty good so far Peter.
I remember these forum conversions well when I helped Russ move open-source-energy.org over from myBB to SMF and finally to Wedge. What a pain. Lots of little clean-up items that take weeks to finally get right. After several months we finally declared, "it's good enough".
Dear Peterae.
I realise that things have to change for one reason or another but I personally am finding the format difficult to read.
The darker blue on a light blue background, not easy for my tired old eyes!! The home button, gone from the bottom of the page, argh!!..... So useful.
Maybe it's just me but the front page seems to lack contrast ?
Just some observations with the realisation that you have had the " Devils own job " to get things back up and running for us, it's not something I would be capable of, many thanks. O0 O0
Cheers Grum.
Hi,
I just tried to use OVR3A theme and now the board got broken for me. I can only browse topics using mobile "wap2" extension now. Can you reset theme for me or fix broken one?
EDIT: Managed to hack way back to default theme by using settings url from other browser tab and wap2. The OVR3/OVR3A theme still need a fix.
Cheers!

Hi Peter
I'm with Grum above exactly, tired eyes as well, the blue seems to penitrate for some reason, oh well we will get used to it I'm sure, and thanks for all you do O0
I'm a bit tied up at the moment, mainly look in for a read only, a lot of personal problems here.

Mike 8)
Hi Matt
Yeah what a job, why did you switch away from smf in the end?
Grumage
I agree lacking contrast, i will address this at some point.
T1000
Yes the old themes no longer work, they are for early versions only hence the reason we are having to build a new one, i can reset you to the new one and will delete the old ones soon.
Thanks Chaps, we will get there, keep the problems coming.
Peter
OK been looking into no spell checker, looks like there is software needed to be installed on the server, so have opened a ticket to get that sorted.
Hi Peterae.
Getting better!! Still something lacking, it doesn't jump out at you yet. :)
How about the home tab? I really liked the one at the bottom of the page, particularly when using my iPad.
Cheers Grum.
I have to agree the theme makes reading long posts difficult and a bit of a strain on the eyes. Though I'm sure we all very much appreciate the efforts gone to to keep the site running. Thanks.
Is it me??
Or is the font size smaller? Or do I needs some new 8) ?? Without tint......
Cheers Grum.
Hi Grum
I'm looking into it now, first thing is the text is black on the old forum, i will check the size as well ;)
Peter
Well hows that now it's black, the font is slightly larger on the new than on the old, just checked :o
Hi Peterae.
Wow, that's better!! From this rather " pedestrian " member a big thank you for all your hard work. O0
Cheers Grum.
Hi Grum
No problem.
Some bad news spell checking no longer seems to work, the host has installed the correct files and it still does not seem to work with smf, having done a bit of research it would appear that versions of php 5.3 and above the spell checker is unsupported.
So the other way to do this is to use your browser spell checker.
Cheers
Peter
OK fixed the most online today & most online ever i hope :)
I will look at the members & guests list next then.
OK installed and fixed High Slide Viewer for our theme so we now get attachment image pop ups
Moved personal Avatar and ranking info on posts to top instead of middle of each post.
Deleted Original Info Stats at the bottom and reformatted layout to the top of front page
Added a duplicate menu bar at the bottom of the page, maybe a bit over the top but Grumage wanted a home button, if you think the whole bar is too much let me know what you think i can just place a home button if preferable.
Am I alone and being obnoxious, in wondering why there is so much space around things and about that solid line under a post ?
Is it my settings ? (Xubuntu 14.04, Firefox 42.0, Screen is 1024x768 on a real alive and running Dell CRT).
The line is there for a tag line, but this other one straight below a post means I put a spacer of a couple of lines so it doesn't look weird to the eye.
I'll be doing just that in a minute lol
Thanks for doing all these upgrades.
if there are more planned, would it be helpful to run a poll ? probably too much to vote on finished webpage type theme ideas, but written ideas could be voted on for some changes.
Hi Slider
Yeah that line is annoying, i will look at removing it.
No need for polls just mention things on here and we can talk about altering things.

Yes, I will second that.
Let's get rid of as much empty wasteful space as possible. Vertical delimiters are fine.
Will my chat mod from the old SMF code be implemented, too?
That picture resizing and embedding worked very well in the old SMF code. I hope the new version will not be any worse.
While you are at it, please make sure that .gif and .apng animations work, too.
I like the way the message text width is adjusted proportionally to the browser window width. No horizontal scrolling necessary, yeah!
I did not test, if that remains true when someone embeds a huge image in a message.
Hi verpies
Yes first thing is to slim down the Avatar width so a post has more width across the page.

OK added a custom page and incorporated Ajax Chat system and added a menu button above.
@Peterae
Just wanted to thank you for all the great work you put into this forum and also for your tactical migration to your new service provider. Takes guts indeed to make such a change and pull through all the road blocks.
Also, doing all this while keeping the site ad free and while keeping the @member size to a logical level is certainly not going with the normal grain of the endless internet money models we are exposed to everywhere else, so again, I have to tip my hat to you and your high degree of true altruism.
Based on the above, I really see no reason that would prohibit you from putting up a donations button somewhere on the home page where @members as well as the majority being quests can chip in what they can and when they can to help alleviate the obvious overhead you have so willfully taken upon yourself to cover.
Just a thought, but sincerely, thank you again.
wattsup
Hi wattsup
Thank you for your kind words, no need for donations unless it's a COP>1 device :)

Dear Peter.
I've just worked out what, to me, is the problem........ The Grey background, it's kind of depressing don't you think?
The old pages were far more vibrant. Perhaps it's just me? Anyone else care to comment?
I'm getting used to it though, but the present format feels cold.
Kind regards, Grum.

No not for this theme, although i have been trying to work out how i can do it, as previously the changed colour was something i wrote, but this theme makes the buttons up top by itself and i don't think i can change the colour, having said that i will try to find a solution.

I can't modify my profile. The drop down menu appears then when I try to drag the mouse down to the drop down menu it just disappears. Can't add profile picture.

I found that if I just click on where the drop down menu comes from then it remains while the mouse over happens, seems to work like that.
..
Hmmm. Has anyone reported any strangeness
in connection with uploading files as attachments?
I've made two attempts and in each case it appears
that the upload is progressing well; but then, when
it seems the upload is complete the Start New Topic
page comes up.
When I then go to the thread I attempted to upload
to to check and see - no new reply appears. It seems
to have gone into a black hole.
Hmmmm.
I can confirm seeing the same muDped.
I thought is was just the NSA putting their nose where it isn't needed.

pdf downloaded fine for me, and I am uploading no problem in standard png, jpeg.
Could it be that it was perhaps the size of the
files? They were approaching 20MB.
Oh well, the files were not that important and
can easily be found on the web. Might have
been too large...
No it would not be the size as the size is set to 500mb

youve not got move this topic ticket i wonder, when you click reply just below the attachments option there are some clickable boxes, the only one that should be ticked is return to this topic.
I see it now. Hadn't noticed that before as there
hadn't been any difficulty before that I recollect.
I'll try it with "Return to this topic" selected.
muDped, try logging out, clearing your browser cache and logging back in.
I was having fits until I did that. I could post and it would just vanish.
I'll try that also. Both FireFox and SeaMonkey
(the two browsers I use) have provision for
clearing the cache. Thanks for the tip.
I'm using Chrome and and on this new server my pages take forever to load up. Actually Chrome times out and it takes three reloads to get the page up.
Smudge
Hi Smudge
Thats really weird, it cannot be the server because i have not had any problems, server speed seems fine, i just tried Chrome as well and that is working ok, maybe worth you trying to clear your cache as well.

I cleared my cache and things got even weirder, had trouble logging on. Time out problem still there, so I tried Internet Explorer. Same problem there, it times out and then I have to reload and I get the page on about the third attempt. Could it have anything to do with my AV, I have Norton?

It is possible that you are short of RAM, Norton will need around 1Gb alone, I had a similar problem some months back when my AV got bigger with updates and scaning new servers before connecting.

I have no trouble logging in with Mozilla Firefox. The threads open quickly and pages load fast.
I have a problem unrelated to the new forum i.e. my task manager shows me banging 100% cpu usage, with a lower value of 70 % at times. I have eliminated all startup programs and am only running Firefox and the windows wireless program.
Running Nod32 and Malwarebytes shows no background ad or virus programs.
The problem is a lot worse when logging on to OU.com with all their ads and embedded stuff. Firefox actually stops responding on that site.
Any suggestions appreciated.

That's what I don't understand, only a couple of processes in the processes tab using around 3%, system idle showing 92 to 97% yet the CPU usage in the performance tab is much higher, like 50%. Doesn't add up.
By the way the new look and feel of the site is very nice and easy to navigate. Thank you for all your hard work making the transition and sorting all the details out.

Maybe check in your registry but be careful this is not for the uninitiated.
Open the registry by going to Start then click on run.
Type "regedit".
Then go to the first location here......
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\RUN
Whatever you see in the right pane that is not familiar to any programs you recognize, delete the line(s). Actually I would delete everything since this is the way I run my computer all the time.
Do the same at this location.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\RUN
Then exit regedit and reboot, then return to these locations and see if anything was added again. Right down the name of the file. Do a search on Google to see if it is any type of malware.
If there is nothing added in these two locations, great.
You may want to jot down the files that were in these locations before you delete them.
Let us know how it went.

Thanks for the registry tweaks, Wattsup. I am not too familiar with what is good and not good for registry entries, same for running processes. I keep seeing new things pop up in processes tab, and believe it may be malware, although I run Malwarebytes regularly to check, and also Eset Nod32. I also use CCleaner to cleanup the registry on a regular basis.
I just now upgraded the memory in the machine, I'll see if that helps.
Sometimes I boot the machine into Ubuntu 14.02, which does not seem to have the same problems as Windblows XP.
As far as computers go I'm good on the hardware end, but not that savvy on the intracacy of registries tweaks and inner operation of memory etc. and don't know what to look for when these type problems crop up.
I do believe it may be some type of malware that is not easily cleaned, because the machine always ran well in the past. It is a low end Acer laptop 1.47 GHz with now 1 GB of ram.
I think I will upgrade to a better machine at some point. I do have a number of much better desktops in operation, but like to use the laptop "on the couch".
Thanks to all for the help and advice.
Sorry to have derailed the thread. I would gladly move to a computer help thread if there is one.
Edit: made the registry deletions and it seems to have improved performance, now CPU usage is sitting at a few percent with only occasional bangs to 100%.
You can "back up" sections of or the entire registry before deleting any keys, if you want.

That's only the tip of an iceberg.
I strongly recommend installing
this 591kB utility (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902) from Microsft to see the rest of the Auto runs.
Excellent suggestion Verpies - for those who find that they cannot
survive without Micro$oft.
For the rest of us there's some flavor of Linux distro which fills our
needs without any of the problems associated with WinDoze.
Every instance of data loss and mysterious hard drive failures
due to malware attacks that I've experienced has been with
Win98 browsing online. Since transitioning to Puppy Linux
several years ago those problems have ceased to exist.
The only problem now is assuring that my "older" machines
have sufficient RAM to accommodate today's massive web
pages when online. 500MB just doesn't cut it anymore, and
1GB is barely adequate. Thankfully, used RAM for older machines
is quite inexpensive now.
Yep, all of my computers are at least 10 years old. Cheap I am.
Verpies is correct, it is just the tip of the iceberg. I would scrap windoz in a second were it not for a few programs I need to run that are just not available in Linux versions. Typically these run data logger software through external hardware boxes or something similar.
The machine I am running right now has both XP and Ubuntu 14.02 installed.
And yes, I too have a lot of machines nearly 10 years old or more that I hate to scrap. Some of them run Puppy Linux or stripped down, customized versions of XP or both in dual boot. They run quite fast without the bloat.
Thrifty?
Quote from: Ion

I know. There are quite a few Windows programs which are
able to perform normally in
Linux with Wine. I use several
myself with
Wine.On the rare occasions when I do use XP or Win98 I never
operate with my network connection activated or even plugged
into the computer.
Although not free as Wine is,
Crossover is another approach
to running Windows programs either in Linux or on the Mac.
The Non-WinDoze world is getting better and better!
Just yesterday I cleaned a friends Windows 8.1 computer which was riddled with malware and I think a virus or a Trojan.
I used SpyBot Search and Destroy. To clean out the Malware.
Then Installed AVG Free Antivirus and it found 1 threat which it promptly removed.
He claims even the screen looks better, probably because the performance is better. It was almost unusable due to pop up warnings from the Paid Anti Virus solution that had expired and ceased working.
It was slow and took a very long time to start up. But now it is working as it should and he is very happy, he tried another guy but he failed to clean out the bugs so now he is pleased. I warned him to stay off the porn sites and don't be tricked into installing "Paid for anti virus solutions" as well as the other tricks used when installing a program it is best to choose the custom install option and uncheck all the things they try to include with the program. Users of free ware on windows will know what I mean.
That was a HP Core I3 laptop, I wish I had one. 8)
I told him to just be aware of when it seems like something is not as it should be and he needs to bring it back in about a month so I can finish the job and tune his settings in windows or upgrade to Windows 10 for him. I'll introduce him to puppy Linux at the same session and make him a usb stick with a version of Linux on it, Linux Mint is my favorite, he has room for a dual boot, but only one hard drive.
Success. I should be charging for it as it took a fair while but I just enjoy making things work properly.
Quote from: FarmHand
...but I just enjoy making things work properly.
Good man FarmHand!! I share that philosophy.
WinDoze users seem to be a hard-headed lot and
I never charge them for helping them to find a way
through their misery by cleaning out their cluttered
systems. Very few are interested in learning to use
Linux though... They seem to think that Linux is hard
and that since its "free" it must lack something.
Android users with their tablets are often very much
interested in Linux on their PCs. Makes sense since
Android is in reality Linux based and they've already
got their feet wet. So our World turns...
Just a little note...
Linux is just as vulnerable to attack as Windows. It all hinges on a very stupid mistake not found on mainframe systems--you NEVER ever mix code and data.
I like Farmhand quite like the look-n-feel of Linux Mint, but I've had it hacked via the Chromium browser. I dare say take any fresh installation, of any modern OS, put it live on the Internet with no firewall, hit a few porn and warez sites and your machine will be junk from that point on. The script kiddies will say, "you're owned!" And they are right. As long as you have a computing device that will execute data instead of only code that belongs there, plan on blowing your system away and reloading it at regular intervals. I personally don't think it's an accident PCs are designed this way. I'll bet there was a time and place where software and hardware architects were told to venture down the path we are on. I could be wrong and if so, please find me an article that describes an incident of IBM z/OS acquiring a virus.
The only really secure Operating System is a Custom Operating System, even then it is only as secure as the people that create it.
I agree with muDped about Android and add that I think Android is probably one of the best things that's happened for Linux spread, reading the Android developers forum and such I see many people who (ROOT) their Android phones to get more use from it also become interested in Linux. A (ROOTED) Android phone can make good use of the Android Terminal Emulator, I've haven't gotten far in learning Android but I have successfully done a full system backup and restored it to the phone after trying a custom ROM on a cheap Chinese phone. Lots of fun. Full on Linux users do seem to be the more computer savvy of us.
Maybe these posts should actually be moved to the rants and moans thread.

well with the pause for upload. Then, once the upload
completes the "Start new topic" window appears.
Then I attempted to reply to the same thread with
a new reply to attach the document with the same
result. The uploads take place followed by the "Start
new topic" page...
I'll now resort to clearing the browser cache to see
if that will change anything. Providing, of course,
that this reply is accepted.
We shall see...

Clearing the cache made no difference.
I've just cleared cookies too (necessitating a new
login to the forum) so we'll see what that may
have accomplished...

This is getting stranger and stranger. Clearing
cookies made no difference either. What might
it possibly be? Re-attempting to modify replies
or to add attachments seems to have blocked
me out of the thread. What has happened to
the uploaded files? Black Hole?

It must be the attachment of 10+MB. I am
able to modify this reply without any difficulty.

There are two settings: One in the forum software itself and the second in the PHP configuration--both should match up and be large enough for typical usage. Maybe Peter can take a look, make adjustments as may be needed and bounce the web server.
OK chaps well done, so indeed it looks like we are unable to upload anything greater than 8mb, it's not the settings in smf but as Matt has said above it looks like the server is limiting it, i don't have control on this shared hosting account, so will open a ticket to get them to change it, but first i thought i would ask Matt if he knows what sort of settings are normal.
What size do we want, maybe 100mb and it looks like we can set a time value before this upload times out.
I have no idea what the normal settings would be, we never set this on the previous server.
I have my local server set to (php.ini):
upload_max_filesize = 2048M
max_file_uploads = 20
This is a local server on my LAN that also supports WordPress. The sizes are large enough to allow me to push video media directly to the site. I tend to doubt a shared hosting service will allow you to go anywhere near that large. Probably best to ask for 64MB and hope that you get it.
Thanks Matt
I will try them for 64mb O0
OK they have set it to 50mb.

Better than a poke in the eye. hehe
If you ever have to or decide to move again, you might consider getting a virtual server from linode.com. That way you can do with it whatever you want, since you have root access to the machine. It's what we did with open-source-energy.org. A little more expensive yes, but you have complete control of all the software and configuration.
Thanks for your help Matt
I've been really happy with these guys so far, they always respond to my call for help, and their pricing seems very reasonable to me.

50 mb is plenty. Most short videos can be made smaller than that.
Well done. O0
Aye, I'll echo the "Well Done!" :)
It is nice to know about these complexities of
successful forum setup and maintenance. :D
Not that I'd ever like to pursue this sort of challenge
though. I'll leave it to the more capable men such
as we have here and be grateful that such "good
hands" make this all possible. 8) O0
I am still having trouble loading pages. The home page comes up immediately but anything else times out and takes 2 or 3 reloads to get it up. This does not happen on my laptop running windows 8, only on my PC running XP. I cleared my Chrome cache and that made no difference. I downloaded the Autoruns utility and there is so much stuff there that I don't know what to disable and what to keep. I tried disabling all the things I thought I didn't need, rebooted and still I have the problem. It didn't occur before the change to a new server. I also get the other problem, when trying to modify a post I sometimes get the start new thread page. Maybe I'll just have to use the laptop all the time.

Hi Smudge
I am using windows XP with no problem but using Firefox browser, I am not sure what the problem can be if you already cleared the cache, Sorry.

Can you post a screen shot of the autoruns screen, just press 'printscreen button on the keyboard and paste into paint, then save as a jpeg, resize if over 1024 pixels ( I do out of habit for forums). Those of us with xp can assist no worries. Others better than I for certain but I can help with some things. I'm curious I'll get on the xp laptop.
Site seems to work ok with my xp machine. I used the autoruns utility and disabled some startups in the
logon section and the
services section anyway, not sure how that would help Chrome but there is Internet Explorer settings as well. nice utility. Old laptop boots a few seconds faster. O0
P.S. I just realized I could make the pages in Chrome 150% zoom by default. So much easier to read. I was doing it manually per page, silly me.
..
Smudge,
Are the problems you're experiencing specific to the
Chrome browser? Do you have other browsers available
for comparison on that machine?
I agree, it is an interesting problem. Hopefully the cause
will be discovered one way or another...
I have the same problem using IE so it's not the Chrome browser. And my laptop uses Chrome with no problems. Both machines have Norton so it is unlikely that is the problem. Although the home page comes up immediately, if I try to refresh it then I'm back into the waiting game with error time outs and reloads before getting the page back up.

Excellent suggestion Verpies - for those who find that they cannot survive without Micro$oft.
Of course this suggestion was for Windoze users because Wattsup was looking into Windows registry, which does not exist on Linux.
Thanks to Verpies link I found this other utility as well Process Explorer- https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/processexplorer
A screenshot like this (from windows 7 desktop comp.) during the time the issue is occurring might help. I wasn't able to reduce the size without bluring the figures and words. sorry. I only had this site open and a pdf in firefox as well as the utility.
This web site handles attached pictures very well for my purposes, I like the way it displays the attached pictures.
First shot is my windoze 7 machine. Second shot is my windoze xp machine. Something is up with the IO on my windows 7 machine, apparently. It takes a long time to start up and is a bit sluggish, old install, could do with an upgrade to doze 10. I'll have unlimited Home Broadband soon so I will do it then. Maybe. The xp machine has SSD while the 7 machine has a HDD. Maybe just windows 7-10 wasting power for me/us.
Last shot is windows 10 machine a 6 core 3500 Mhz, so 10% cpu usage is a fair bit really and the network usage is conveniently not given by windows 10 to the utility to show. I can see how The different windows versions use the resources differently. Makes me want to use xp to save power and network data usage ect. 10 is pretty good to use though after setting it up and killing all the data eating stuff. Still cannot turn off automatic updates which is a big no no to me.
I was using this site and doing other stuff when the shots were taken.
P.S. Windows 10 was actually updating. I just got the notification to restart due to updates are installed. grrrrrr. Just for curiosity the last shot shows the system usage during the update and when it stops.
