Hmmm. Has anyone reported any strangeness
in connection with uploading files as attachments?
I've made two attempts and in each case it appears
that the upload is progressing well; but then, when
it seems the upload is complete the Start New Topic
page comes up.

When I then go to the thread I attempted to upload
to to check and see - no new reply appears. It seems
to have gone into a black hole.

Oh well, the files were not that important and can easily be found on the web. Hi Smudge

It is possible that you are short of RAM, Norton will need around 1Gb alone, I had a similar problem some months back when my AV got bigger with updates and scaning new servers before connecting.

I have no trouble logging in with Mozilla Firefox. The threads open quickly and pages load fast.

I have a problem unrelated to the new forum i.e. my task manager shows me banging 100% cpu usage, with a lower value of 70 % at times. I have eliminated all startup programs and am only running Firefox and the windows wireless program.

Running Nod32 and Malwarebytes shows no background ad or virus programs.

The problem is a lot worse when logging on to OU.com with all their ads and embedded stuff. Firefox actually stops responding on that site.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Sorry i don't understand what's going on with your set-up

That's what I don't understand, only a couple of processes in the processes tab using around 3%, system idle showing 92 to 97% yet the CPU usage in the performance tab is much higher, like 50%. Doesn't add up.

By the way the new look and feel of the site is very nice and easy to navigate. Thank you for all your hard work making the transition and sorting all the details out.

Maybe check in your registry but be careful this is not for the uninitiated.

Open the registry by going to Start then click on run.

Type "regedit".

Then go to the first location here......
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\RUN

Whatever you see in the right pane that is not familiar to any programs you recognize, delete the line(s). Actually I would delete everything since this is the way I run my computer all the time.

Do the same at this location.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\RUN

Then exit regedit and reboot, then return to these locations and see if anything was added again. Right down the name of the file. Do a search on Google to see if it is any type of malware.

If there is nothing added in these two locations, great.
You may want to jot down the files that were in these locations before you delete them.

Let us know how it went.

Thanks for the registry tweaks, Wattsup. I am not too familiar with what is good and not good for registry entries, same for running processes. I keep seeing new things pop up in processes tab, and believe it may be malware, although I run Malwarebytes regularly to check, and also Eset Nod32. I also use CCleaner to cleanup the registry on a regular basis.

I just now upgraded the memory in the machine, I'll see if that helps.

Sometimes I boot the machine into Ubuntu 14.02, which does not seem to have the same problems as Windblows XP.

As far as computers go I'm good on the hardware end, but not that savvy on the intracacy of registries tweaks and inner operation of memory etc. and don't know what to look for when these type problems crop up.

I do believe it may be some type of malware that is not easily cleaned, because the machine always ran well in the past. It is a low end Acer laptop 1.47 GHz with now 1 GB of ram.

I think I will upgrade to a better machine at some point. I do have a number of much better desktops in operation, but like to use the laptop "on the couch".

Sorry to have derailed the thread. I would gladly move to a computer help thread if there is one.

Edit: made the registry deletions and it seems to have improved performance, now CPU usage is sitting at a few percent with only occasional bangs to 100%.
