I hope that all readers are aware of the fact that pure (distilled) water does not conduct electricity. Water needs to be at least a little bit acidic in oder to conduct electricity. And the observed effect is called "acidic transport of protons in water".

So, it is the age old knowledge that only acidic water conducts electricity, but now one knows a little bit more about how this happens.
