The "expert" scam

[Allcanadian]

Watching an interesting show on the "Doc Zone" called "The trouble with experts". Apparently two thirds of experts predictions are wrong and anyone can become an expert. More often the experts are wrong and the odds are generally the same as a monkey throwing darts, lol.

It's basically just another scam and anyone can pay a minimal fee to get a piece of paper claiming they are an expert on anything. Personally I always knew it was pseudoscience because at the end of the day they are just people with more questions than answers just like everyone else. Maybe this is why Warren Buffet said his secretary is just as qualified to pick successful stock as any supposed expert. Apparently the expert phenomena is just another pseudoscience scam but I think we all knew that because at the end of day what we do matters and it works or it's just another lie.

Just think.... that man or woman sitting up there in the pointy end of the airliner, operating the systems and occasionally actually flying the damned thing,  was trained by experts, in aircraft and/or simulators built and operated by experts, and is probably an expert his or her self, to boot.

There are experts, and there are "experts". Let's hope your life doesn't depend on the latter type. Do you trust your doctor?

Hey TK

Just think.... that man or woman sitting up there in the pointy end of the airliner, operating the systems and occasionally actually flying the damned thing,  was trained by experts, in aircraft and/or simulators built and operated by experts, and is probably an expert his or her self, to boot.

Interesting story... a friend I know very well is about to go on a flight and is sitting in the bar having a drink. He see's two Air Canada pilots in the bar slamming back some whiskey and 20 minutes later as he boards his flight who do you think is at the jet door to greet him?... the two Air Canada pilots who were in the bar. Keep in mind this wasn't the Air Canada pilot in the news who was found passed out in the cockpit with a blood alcohol content three times the legal limit who was charged with being impaired. Are these the "experts" your talking about ?.

There are experts, and there are "experts". Let's hope your life doesn't depend on the latter type. Do you trust your doctor?

No I don't trust any doctor and I think trust should never enter the equation only facts. Interesting story... my niece goes to the doctor with pains in her side and the doctor diagnoses it as menstrual cramps, gives her some medication and sends her home. Next day she ends up in emergency because her appendix had ruptured two days ago, been misdiagnosed by the doctor and has now gone septic. She spent over a week in the hospital in critical care and to be honest it was touch and go as to whether she would make it.

Then we have the case where another family member who called my wife, a former RN, about an illness which seemed to be getting worse. My wife asked her what the prescription was and said it didn't sound right. I was present so I said give me the prescription and I will find out what it is because I am a professional and try to act as such. As it turns out the "doctor" and I use that term liberally, not only prescribed the wrong medication but prescribed it at three times the recommended dosage.

In another instance I took my daughter to update her immunizations because she planned to donate her spare time working at the nearby hospital. At which point I started quizzing the so called "health care professional" about the immunizations. As it turns out she did not know what was in the immunizations, the possible side effects, what should be done about possible side effects nor who to call. I would not use the term health care professional to describe this person however the term Bimbo comes to mind.

Personally I have learned not to always judge a book by it's cover and a supposed designation or occupation should not be grounds to assume a person is competent at what they do. In fact from the proof I have seen first hand I would have to assume most people are not even remotely close to being as competent as they would have others believe. We are not judged on what we say or would have others believe we are judged on what we do and the consequences of our actions in reality. No offense but I have found most claimed expertise to be in the same realm as pixie dust and unicorns from my experience.

On the upside... of the people here who I consider to know their stuff and are able to offer a fairly unbiased opinion on something your name comes to mind. If a person makes the effort to become an expert on a given subject and conducts themselves as such by doing unbiased research and experiments to prove a matter then in my books they are an expert. A piece of paper hanging on a wall cannot replace competency in my opinion.

TK, AC,

Most enlightening discussion of "experts."  Unfortunately,
the term "expert" as it applies to those who are presented
as such by the media, has come to have little meaning with
regard to competency.  As we grow older and acquire "wisdom"
we sadly discover how reliant our World is upon the use of the
Lie and Mass Deception.  The optimism and hope of our youth
is displaced by discouragement as we observe how "business"
is actually conducted in the institutions of government, science,
education and healthcare.  The Liars are everywhere...

Hey mike

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIsMbDM_V14

Have you ever been in a room with or talked with people worth tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars... it's interesting. It's interesting because you don't generally hear the normal chit chat and there is the very real impression either you bring something of tangible value to the table or we were just wasting our time here and I can respect that.

The problem in this scenario is that the average person has little of real value to offer. I mean the average guy with a wife a two kids with an average job and an average income and and the average level of knowledge simply has nothing of real value to offer. I understand many have come to believe wishful thinking and their opinion has some value but no not so much. At the end of the day if we do not have something unlike the average person which is real and substantial and of practical value then were just peddling BS like we see in this video.

Theories, unsubstantiated rumors, beliefs, opinions and wishful thinking are a wonderful thing but as we know reality is another matter altogether. Because when we have something of real, tangible, in your face, irrefutable value and we walk into that room everyone knows who the "man" is ... it's you. You transcend wealth and power because you have something wealth and power cannot buy which is pretty cool in my books. Anything less is just wishful thinking, resentment and BS in my opinion.

S C I E N C E : I thought it was i before e except after c?

There are experts and then just spurts.

And then there is that personal moment when the exuberation of the dream becomes a reality. The event before that was the inkling turns total mindscape and one knows its possible.

There is no try. Only do.

There is no try. Only do

It is strange we see so many people trapped in the technology-information bubble. It works only so long as we remain within the bubble however the moment we step out were on our own. Nature does not care if we have an opinion or what we believe or not.

The reality is pretty easy to understand, walk out into a forest and see how far your opinions and beliefs get you... not far I am afraid. Nature does not debate nor does it believe and either we can apply what we claim we know or we die... it's that simple.

So I would have to agree trying and believing is not knowing and doing. Nature and reality is the ultimate BS detector which is pretty cool.

We are free to believe whatever we want. However denying something like Climate Change for example is not going stop that flood or that drought or that storm in the process of tearing off our roof... Nature doesn't care what we believe it cares what we do.
