I feel compelled to experiment with this ,I am sourcing a small diesel test engine.
Any comments or advice welcome

thx
Chet
ps
and since this makes excess heat it will be a good compliment to Mr.Mason's designs....... O0

Hi Chet
Hopefully you can get an old generator or something.

I would use 1 Liter of Acetone and dissolve 10mg of Boric Acid in this acetone.(check it dissolves correctly)

I am not sure how corrosive Boric acid is to the internal mechanics, i have not researched this.

Now we have a 100/1 acid / Acetone mix we can now add 100ml of the acid mix to 1 liter of test diesel to give us our 1000/1 mix ratio, make sure the Acteone/Acid mix is well mixed with the diesel, each time a test is run.

We now have almost a 10% Acetone/ Diesel mix, i am not sure how that will affect the engine running, so i would first do a test with just acetone and Diesel in the above ratio of 100mL Acetone to 1 Liter of diesel, test the diesel runs good, then go on and do an Acetone/Acid mix.

If Arie is correct you should see a gain of 25 in power, although the diesel needs an automatic throttle to maintain a constant speed, so therefore it should run with the same power output but at a greatly reduced fuel flow.

If the above is too strong we could make the Acetone ratio less

dissolve 100mg of Boric Acid in 1 Liter of acetone. 10/1 ratio mix
now add 10ml of mix to 1 liter of diesel.  O0

Thanks ,I am meeting a fellow in a few hours for this

Hi Chet
Nice price, do you think you can fix it  >:-)

Peter

Chet K

Its quite heavy..........I think I am a few inches shorter after putting it into the RUUU [wifes subaru ]

Fix it.....?
that's what I do   O0

The fellow said "it sat in the old Church basement for years "

cranked it over a few minutes ago and she has ample compression, although I do need to check just how much .

I am still fuzzy on this being the best approach for testing Arie's claims ,I did a little studying on The PSI of a diesel engine compression stroke
seems about 3-400 psi .

I still like a "bang" chamber with a method for real time measurement.....

we shall see?

thx
Chet

Peterae

Looks heavy. this could be interesting, i am not a mechanical guy really, although i did strip and rebuild a kit car in the early 90's a Pilgrim Buldog MK3
god that picture could even be of mine, looks identical when i finished the rebuild  O0

Are you going to be able to work out it's compression ratio or would that be on a data sheet for it or manual  ???

Whats the process for working out why it dont work.

Chet K

Change the filters,  check fuel pump for pressure,  clean the injector then bench test it for a nice spray [no drips or leaks] ,reassemble  prime the fuel system and hopefully she fires.

Chet
PS
Snazzy ride you had there  O0

Peterae

Sounds good, keep us updated I'm interested, and may need to go through the process myself at some point  ;)

Just a pressure chamber....
Fellows I want to make a simple venturi carb for this diesel genset ?

I feel the injector will be hard to meter [besides the injector pump has issues]

This simple Ruggerini Mase one cylinder diesel Gen set does not have a throttle body for air metering it runs at one speed
"GO "
or "Stop"

This might be a very simple way to test "power" typically a diesel won't run very well on a carburetor [if it all ?]
if I can coax a run out of these "Arie" ingredients that might be the simplest test to try?

first tests will be with a spray bottle at intake using different solutions to test for a "kick" [firing]and perhaps a tachometer to count the revolutions for each Mix that actually fires the engine.

so I am going to use distance traveled {RPM]  for the first tests,
figuring a way to be consistent with the fuel  Dose??

any thoughts on technique or measurement protocol from the peanut gallery welcome  ;D

thx

QuoteI feel the injector will be hard to meter [besides the injector pump has issues]
you don't need the injector to meter, you meter the mix by adding more or less acetone/mix to the diesel.  O0

Surely the diesel generator must have a throttle otherwise what happens when the generator gets loaded, surely it has to inject more diesel for a higher load.

Chet K

Peter
seems it throttles with the injector/governor control..

I have been very busy with other tasks and fussing with the Genny as time permits ..also it appears that the manufacturer fell off the face of the earth a few years back?

trying to find info , manuals and such, did not yield any results except some taunting parts data[no longer available]

No engine Data Tag [ is illegible] ...?

thx

Chet should be able to find a manual on the engine, then we can take a look at it. It may have some type of governor or metering circuit to allow load changes, if not then it will be running at some fixed fuel input.

The generator can drive a resistive immersion heater in a large insulated tank of water, then measure temp rise over ambient  and work back to Joules per run. Size of tank will depend on run time / fixed batch of fuel.

I would do several runs with normal diesel to get a good baseline before adding mixes, being aware that run time may also affect efficiency (engine warmup).

A small electric water heater tank may work well, but the temperature limit control will have to be turned all the way up or bypassed. It should also be sure to have a open pipe so as not to produce steam pressure in the tank.

Posted while Chet was posting, sorry.

I think its the 191 model

A Bosch pump...... now I'm getting happy  :D

They are still in business

On the Arie contacts please place anything you can find here

Peterae

the manual says it has 2 cylinders  ???

So yes it does alter the fuel going into the injectors and accounts for loading.

The biggest problem i see is that when the mix is added, if all goes to plan it will see combustion 25 X it's normal combustion level, a bit like running a normal engine on Nitro  :o

What ever happens you want to be running from a jamjar or small bottle, just a small measured amount of diesel & mix each test.

before doing measured tests we want to know a few things.

Load the generator with maybe a 1KW Bulb

1)Does it run for 5 minuets on normal diesel.

2) does it run for 5 minuets with diesel & the Acetone mix

is there any notable difference when it runs between tests 1 & 2

if you want to do a basic test you could use a jamjar half filled with diesel and time each test to see if the generator runs the same time for tests 1 & 2

once tests 1 & 2 are done add you acetone/ Boric Acid mix to the diesel, same volume in jam jar as in test 1 & 2

run it and time it again and compare with 1 & 2

Because the 1kw bulb will behave the same in tests 1,2 & 3 and as long as the same volume of fuel is used each time then if we are getting free power and the generator can adjust for that then test 3 should run a lot longer.  O0

Using the light bulb load alone may work if you can be sure the output is extremely steady. Any increase or decrease in RPM's over a previous test or during a test will make precise measurement difficult.

A kill-A-watt meter on the output however could give an accurate tally of all power produced. Maybe this is what you had in mind.

The water heating method integrates all the electrical power produced (minus losses) into a single final number or tally of expended energy and takes into account (and the final tally) all variations in speed throughout a run.

Hi ION
Indeed i did think about the Kilowatt meter, but the idea here really is to do a fast and easy few tests to see if there is a glaring difference between running with and without the mix, and also to check it does run with the mix, I'm not sure how the engine will behave with the mix.

If the mix works as perscribed by Arie i don't think the engine will like it 1 bit, infact if it runs really bad with the mix i think that would be confirmation enough that something is going on.

Once established then i agree much more detailed/ measured tests need doing.  O0
