I stumbled on this and thought i would post it for awareness purposes, we lost Otto to a heart attack and recently GroundLoop is hopefully recovering.

Since many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack without help, the person whose heart is beating improperly and who begins to feel faint, has only about 10 seconds left before losing consciousness.

7. However, these victims can help themselves by coughing repeatedly and very vigorously.

A deep breath should be taken before each cough, and the cough must be deep and prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest.

A breath and a cough must be repeated about every two seconds without let-up until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again.

8. Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating.

The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm. In this way, heart attack victims can get to a hospital.

9. Tell as many other people as possible about this. It could save their lives!!

10. A cardiologist says If everyone who gets this mail kindly sends it to 10 people, you can bet that we’ll save at least one life.

I would imagine it would be hard to cough when having a heart attack but as i have not had one it's difficult to know as you say proof is trying, but just in case it may save a life it's worth knowing.

Personally i think everyone who is involved on these forums that has friends has a duty as a friend to setup a way to let us know if something does happen to them, to tell a close family member how to contact friends on these forums if something does happen to them.
It may not appear so but all of the active posters over here and also on other forums are friends to a lot of us a sort of extended family, as we spend so much of our lives trying to work towards a common goal.

Dear Peterae.

A very interesting article, but I think luck plays a large part.

From my own experience, rapidly approaching 12 years ago it depends on the cause. I had a slight defect in one of my cardiac arteries, just a little smaller in diameter where a piece of plaque decided to lodge early one Sunday morning.

I first thought, ooh, this is a strange time to get indigestion but went downstairs to get some remedy which didn't help at all. I quickly realised, mainly from the cold sweat that was breaking, there was something rather more than indigestion going on!! I woke my wife who was horrified to see that I had turned blue grey in colour Twas then a rush to phone the emergency service. We are quite remote, our post code puts us 3/4 of a mile away and yes, the ambulance got lost!! My daughter was speaking on the phone and my wife frantically running up the road trying to find them.

On arrival the paramedic gave me 300 mg of Aspirin and several doses of Morphine, it all got a little hazy after that!! Blue light on was one comment remembered.

At the hospital I was given a clot buster which then moved the plaque to a smaller place thus setting off my second heart attack !! I then had to wait whilst the cool down period of the drug elapsed before a second dose could be administered. I was, apparently, only 20 minutes away from being air lifted to Liverpool heart hospital. Might have been exciting had I been conscious enough!

So, you see, luck plays a rather large part. My defective artery was low down, just damaging 25% of the muscle, my dear mother was dead in under 3 minutes when she had her heart attack.

I was repaired 6 weeks later by a simple stent, I watched the whole thing on a large TV screen, amazing!!

Cyan pepper powder, a whole teaspoon stirred into warm water and swallowed is also known to help during a heart attack. But does it burn!!

Yes, that kept the ticker from shutting off permanently, but the dumping of stress is what has kept you here for the past 11+ years.

Looking at the picture you posted of your dogs and grandson... That's why you are still with us and will be for a long time.

Funny how we almost always come to a point in our lives where a good kick in the butt (sometimes chest) is what we need to straighten us out.
